3 Days in Istanbul: The Classic Route (Sultanahmet, Galata, Bosphorus)

How to see Istanbul properly in 3 days: which neighborhood, in what order, transfer and transport tips. Optimized for families, couples, and solo travelers.

Seeing Istanbul in 3 days is doable, but only with a plan. Wrong route = 8 hours lost in traffic. This guide gives you a location-based day-by-day plan, which neighborhood to stay in for what gain, and how to start right from the airport.

Where Should You Stay?

AreaProsConsFor Whom
SultanahmetAll classics in walking distanceDead at night, touristy restaurantsFirst-time visitors
Beyoğlu / Galataİstiklal, nightlife, cafésNeed a taxi to classics in morningCouples, young travelers
Beşiktaş / NişantaşıLocal life, shoppingFar from historic sitesRepeat visitors
Kadıköy (Asian side)Local, affordableExtra commute to European sideBackpackers, long stays

For 3 days: 1 night in Sultanahmet + 2 in Galata. Knock out the classics, then shift to modern Istanbul.

Day 0: Airport to City

You'll be tired on landing day. Our recommendation:

  • Book a fixed-price VIP transfer — driver meets you with a name sign, takes you to the hotel
  • To Sultanahmet: ~45 min
  • To Galata: ~55 min
  • From Sabiha Gökçen: 60-80 min (Asia → Europe crossing)

Day 1: The Classic Historic Peninsula

Morning (09:00-13:00) — Sultanahmet Triangle

  • Hagia Sophia Mosque — enter at opening, no queues
  • Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque — walking distance, free
  • Basilica Cistern — 30 min is enough, buy tickets online
  • Hippodrome Square — Obelisk and Serpent Column

Lunch (13:00-14:30)

  • Nearby: Matbah or Deraliye (Ottoman cuisine, in Sultanahmet)
  • More authentic: 20 min taxi toward Beşiktaş → Kanaat Lokantası (Üsküdar) ✓ classic

Afternoon (14:30-18:00)

  • Topkapı Palace + Harem — needs 2.5-3 hours, your longest stop
  • Walk down through Gülhane Park to Eminönü

Evening (18:00-)

  • Spice Bazaar (closes 19:00) — spices, Turkish delight
  • Galata Bridge for fish sandwich + Bosphorus view
  • If your hotel is in Galata: walk back (uphill from the bridge)

Day 2: Bosphorus, Art, and Galata

Morning (10:00-13:00) — Beşiktaş + Bosphorus

  • From the hotel → Dolmabahçe Palace — first morning slot (queues build up)
  • 3 hours for Selamlık + Harem combined
  • Tea break at Beşiktaş Pier

Afternoon (13:00-15:00) — Bosphorus Cruise

  • Şehir Hatları Short Bosphorus Tour (2 hours) ✓ recommended
  • Long tour (6 hours, to Anadolu Kavağı) — only if the weather is great
  • Alternative: Private Bosphorus cruise (1.5 hr, boat rental) — €80-150 for groups

Afternoon-Evening (15:30-18:00)

  • Galata Tower — 360° Istanbul views
  • Galata Mevlevihanesi (Whirling Dervish Lodge) or Pera Museum
  • Walk İstiklal Street from Tünel up to Taksim

Evening

  • Asmalımescit / Nevizade alleys — meyhane, fresh fish
  • Or Karaköy waterfront — modern, busy, hipster vibe

Day 3: Asian Side + Shopping

Morning (10:00-13:00) — Kadıköy

  • Kadıköy ferry (Eminönü/Karaköy → Kadıköy) — 20 min, best photos
  • Kadıköy Market breakfast: Çiya Sofrası (anti-touristy, Anatolian cuisine) ✓
  • Walk Moda seaside

Afternoon (13:00-17:00) — Üsküdar + Kuzguncuk

  • From Kadıköy, bus to Üsküdar (~20 min)
  • Maiden's Tower — distant photo
  • Mihrimah Sultan Mosque — Sinan's work
  • Ferry back to Beşiktaş

Evening (Last Night) — Bosphorus-View Dinner

  • Sunset Grill & Bar (Ulus) — pricey but unbeatable view
  • Lacivert (Anadolu Hisarı) — local, more reasonable
  • Yelken (Beşiktaş) — mid-range

Day 4: Departure Day

  • Early flight: leave Sultanahmet/Galata → IST 4-4.5 hours early (traffic)
  • Sabiha Gökçen-bound: 5 hours early (Europe → Asia + distance)
  • Pre-book a fixed-price transfer — Pegasus runs late, taxis double the price at the last minute

Practical Tips

Transport:

  • Get an Istanbulkart — ferry/metro/bus all in one (from hotel reception)
  • VIP transfer is economical for longer rides (2+ pax)
  • Solo: metro + taxi mix

Hours:

  • Museums usually closed Mondays (Topkapı closed Mondays)
  • Friday 12:00-14:00 mosques close for prayer, then reopen
  • Bosphorus tour: check wind forecast — cancellations in storms

Money:

  • 3 days, mid-range: €350-500 per person (excl. hotel)
  • Müzekart Istanbul (~€20) — worth it if you'll visit 5+ museums
  • Turkish delight: avoid touristy prices, go for Hacı Bekir or Koska

Bottom Line

You can honestly "see Istanbul" in 3 days — if you respect the location logic. Sultanahmet → Beyoğlu → Asia, one major traffic crossing per day. And starting from the airport with a fixed-price transfer is the easiest way to begin on the right foot.
